Astronomers Discover New Hyperluminous Quasar

A team of scientists has uncovered a new quasar, one of the brightest and most distant objects in the known universe. The quasar, named eFEDSJ0828–0139, is powered by a supermassive black hole that is accreting matter at an extraordinary rate.

Quasars are active galactic nuclei that emit immense amounts of energy, often outshining entire galaxies. They are crucial tools for studying the universe’s history and evolution.

The newly discovered quasar is particularly noteworthy due to its high star-formation rate and its black hole’s super-Eddington accretion rate. This means that the black hole is consuming matter at a rate much faster than it can radiate energy, making it an extremely powerful object.

Researchers used a combination of telescopes, including the Seimei Telescope and the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope, to confirm the quasar’s nature and measure its properties. They found that the quasar has a mass of approximately 620 million solar masses and is located at a redshift of 1.62, meaning it is very distant from Earth.
